Seminar on the mental wellbeing of PhD-candidates

On 28/06 ACV KU Leuven and the VAPL are organising a public seminar with experts to discuss the worryingly levels of burnout and psychosocial risk among PhD-candidates. We invite PhD-candidates, employee representatives, colleagues, etc. to discuss the presented recent research findings and share thoughts on how to move towards structural changes.

After the presentations and Q&A by the invited speakers, prof. Katia Levecque (UGent), prof. Hans De Witte (KU Leuven), we finish with a roundtable discussion.

Katia Levecque is Professor at the Department of Industrial and Organizational Psychology of Ghent University and Promotor of ECOOM UGent (Centre of Expertise on Research & Development – Unit HR in Research). Her research focuses on employment relations, occupational wellbeing and performance, and HR in academia. She has published on work organisation of at Flemish universities and mental health problems in PhD students and is currently analyzing a new survey of PhD-candidates, focussing on effective policy measures.


Hans De Witte is Professor Work Psychology at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the KU Leuven, with a research focus on o.a. job insecurity and the experience of work, both positive (e.g. job satisfaction and work engagement) and negative (e.g. burnout and stress). He is also a member of the expert committee supporting the psychosocial risk monitoring of the KU Leuven, and presented on previous ACV KU Leuven-activities on mental health in academia.
